SUMMARY:Quantum threats and opportunities: The future of cybersecurity
DESCRIPTION:This is an event in collaboration with University of Surrey’s Centre for Cyber Security (their ‘Future of Cyber’ series) and SASIG. \nAs quantum technology evolves\, the cybersecurity landscape is undergoing a seismic shift\, redefining how we protect digital assets. Once a theoretical concept\, quantum computing is rapidly becoming a reality with profound security implications. This event will explore the dual-edged impact of quantum technology on cybersecurity\, addressing both threats and opportunities. Quantum systems pose a significant risk to traditional encryption (potentially rendering it obsolete) while also driving advancements like quantum-resistant algorithms and quantum key distribution (QKD) that offer unprecedented data security. \nWe’ll examine the latest research and breakthroughs in quantum security\, covering the risks of quantum decryption\, the race for post-quantum cryptography\, and practical QKD applications. Experts from industry and academia will share actionable insights to help organisations prepare for the quantum future. Whether you’re in cybersecurity\, technology\, or business\, this event provides essential guidance to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the quantum era. \nThis event is open to members\, non-member front-line cybersecurity professionals\, and academics.

SUMMARY:Surrey Cyber Security Cluster | Innovations and Implications in 5G and Transport
DESCRIPTION:Innovations and Implications in 5G and Transport\n30 November 2023 | 18:00 – 21:00 BST \nShilling Building\, Royal Holloway\, University of London\, Egham Hill\, Egham Surrey TW20 0EX \nTechnical Level High:\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is suitable for professionals with a high level of knowledge surrounding IT Networks and Cyber security.\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\nSurrey Cyber Security Cluster’s Red Team Thursday event is in motion\, and they are thrilled to have the opportunity to be hosted by Royal Holloway\, University of London. for a evening designed exclusively for tech experts and enthusiasts. During this event\, they will discuss the security and safety requirements of potential drone networks for the delivery of light cargo in cities. \nSurrey Cyber Security Cluster will delve into topics such as ethical considerations\, effective communication\, and appropriate scope definition. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how to conduct Red Teaming exercises with care and responsibility\, without compromising the integrity of the organisation they are working with. \nFeatured Presentation\nThe question of what resilience means to UAVs in urban airspace\, and the technological implications of this at design time\, is central to this talk. Darren asks: What happens when 5g fails\, and drones fall back on alternative communication methods to ensure their safe operation? \nDarren will give a guided tour through the concept of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs)\, from his PhD work exploring the security issues of MANET routing and weak security assumptions made in the design of such protocols\, through to his current work identifying methods of securing such networks in practice. \nEvent Speaker\n \nDarren Hurley-Smith\nSenior Lecturer\nRoyal Holloway\, University of London\nDarren Hurley-Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Information Security with the Information Security Group\, Royal Holloway University of London. He received the B.Eng. (Hons) in Hardware and Software Engineering (2012)\, and a PhD. in Autonomous Systems Network Security (2015) from the University of Greenwich. Since then\, he has worked in a variety of security-related areas\, including RFID authentication\, random number generation\, and statistical testing. \nDarren is particularly interested in the impact of engineering and implementation choices on the security of everyday systems – particularly cutting-edge drone networks and autonomous vehicles. He is the Technical Operations Manager for Omnidrome – Royal Holloway’s dedicated cross-disciplinary drone lab. He is also a keen VHDL developer and enjoys reverse engineering random number generators and hardware-implemented cryptosystems. \n\nDr. Nick Reed \nFounder at Reed Mobility\, Chief Road Safety Adviser at National Highways\nDr Nick Reed is the founder of Reed Mobility\, an independent research consultancy on the future of mobility\, working across public\, private and academic sectors to deliver transport systems that are safe\, clean\, efficient\, ethical and equitable. \nHe has led numerous trials of self-driving vehicles in the UK and has advised the European Commission and UK government on automated vehicle regulations. \nIn November 2021\, he was appointed as the first ever Chief Road Safety Adviser to National Highways\, providing review and challenge to the organisation in its aim to deliver Vision Zero on the national strategic road network.
